Abstract
The human retrovirus, HTLV-I, is the etiologic agent for several lymphoproliferative and neurologic disorders. Currently, this virus is being spread through certain high-risk populations in a manner similar to that of the AIDS virus, HIV, but owing to the very long latency period, symptoms may not present for years or decades. Immediate testing of the donor blood pool is recommended to reduce the spread of this infectious agent.
