Clouds and the inversion problem

Abstract
The inversion problem or classical limb darkening problem is considered for a realistic model of the earth's atmosphere having an imbedded cloud. Outgoing radiances from the earth-atmosphere system are computed numerically for different cloud amounts at heights of 3, 7, and 11 km above the earth's surface. These radiances are then inverted using the nonlinear inversion method, and the results for different cloudy atmospheres are compared with the inferred temperature profile for a cloud-free atmosphere. Low clouds perturb the inversion results in a completely different manner as compared to high clouds. Middle clouds seem to exhibit a combination of the low and high cloud characteristics. It is concluded that representative temperature inferences are possible from the lower stratosphere down to the cloud level and that there appears to be the prospect of estimating the general state of cloudiness in the atmosphere.
