Abstract
Differences between low- & middle-SES children's responses to wh-questions were studied (N = 60 each low- & middle-SES children between ages 3:6 & 5:2). Responses were analyzed in order to examine differences in the cognitive strategies used by each of the SES groups to respond to who, what, where, how, & why questions. Findings indicated that low-SES children employed a different answering strategy to questions in which the answer was not known. Among incorrect response patterns for where, when, how, or why questions, significantly more low-SES children responded with what answers. Examination of correct responses revealed that low-SES children gave more responses to where, when, how, & why questions at a level indicating a minimal or restricted understanding of what information was being requested. Among both groups of children, it was found that they differed on the number of correct responses to who & what questions depending on whether who or what was the subject or the O of the question. 4 Tables, 11 References.
