Abstract

Black Education Education History
When we first came together to envision a special issue commemorating the May 17, 2024 70th anniversary of the Brown v. Board of Education decision, we hoped to pay homage to the legacy of the Supreme Court ruling which contended that racial discrimination in public schools was unconstitutional, overturning the "separate but equal" Plessy v. Ferguson law of the land since 1896. In addition, we sought to amplify the critical role of the Journal of Negro Education (JNE) in preserving the historical footprint of the enduring spirit of Black education throughout the 20th and 21st centuries. We were also excited to engage with the JNE archives to rediscover the journal's legacy in preserving empirical research on the Black educational experience. Our call went out to educators and scholars encouraging them to grapple with Brown's legacy and re(imagine) the future of Black education. Throughout the journey of this special issue, we were in a space of hope and idealism at the prospect of electing the first Black woman to ascend to the presidency.
