Abstract
•Community-level moderate/severe disaster exposure was associated with increased loss to follow-up (LTF) across exam intervals.•Disaster exposure was not associated with mortality.•Findings suggest disasters influence cohort participation through mechanisms distinct from survival.•Results highlight potential selection bias in longitudinal aging research as disasters become more frequent.
