Abstract

Adolescents Children Counseling Hospitalization Institutionalization (Persons) Mental Health Services Mental Hospitals
Hospital records from 62 children & adolescents who had been in a state psychiatric facility in 1988/89 show that less restrictive services such as outpatient mental health services were received by most of the cohort prior to their index admission. Also, a number had been involved with the juvenile justice system, & most had been placed out-of-home; 90% had at least one prior psychiatric hospitalization, & 50% had received postrelease case management & individual counseling. A higher proportion of non-service receivers were rehospitalized than service receivers, but the latter also had a high rate of rehospitalization. These findings raise questions as to the appropriateness of service provision during & following hospitalization. 2 Tables, 14 References. Adapted from the source document.
