Abstract
The efficacy and toxicity of cefoxitin and mezlocillin were compared in a clinical study. In 41 patients treated with cefoxitin and 39 treated with mezlocillin, the clinical response was favourable in 89.5% and 94.1% respectively. Both antibiotics were effective in the treatment of septicaemia, pulmonary infection, urinary tract infection, intra-abdominal and pelvic infections, and skin and soft-tissue infections. They were equally effective in the treatment of infections caused by anaerobic organisms. No major haematologic, hepatic, or renal toxicity was encountered in patients treated with either drug.
