Abstract
What does Jesper Hoffmeyer mean by his use of the body as the physical interpreter of a series of discontinuous content events, such that this interpretation is called ‘consciousness’? I suspect I have never quite understood this suggestion, as it seems to me that doing so makes the body into a boundary between the individual (with its varied swarm intelligences) and an umwelt that is somehow exterior to that body. However, ‘consciousness’ is a strange kind of emergent phenomenon.
