Control of Vortex Elements: Flat Coordinates vs. Adiabatic Control
IFAC Proceedings Volumes, v 36(2), pp 217-222

Abstract
We discuss two methods of controlling the motion of two elliptical vortex patches using a point vortex. One way is to use the method of flat coordinates (a brute force method). Hamiltonian structure of control field is important to prove controllability and Hamiltonian structure of nominal system leads to significant extension of reachable domain. The other approach is to use control that is a small perturbation compared with the nominal system. We show that control is a set of impulses in phase with fast (angle) variable of the nominal system. We compare the two approaches and discuss their relative advantages
