Abstract

beauty standards culture feminism feminist family therapy narratives physical appearance psychotherapy training therapeutic alliance therapist development
Through the narratives of three female therapists from Brazil, Mexico, and Turkey, this manuscript aims to describe how the standards of beauty are shaped in the Western World, how they get transmitted to other cultures through colonialism and media, and how they subsequently impact beauty ideals globally. Further, through a locational feminist framework, researchers seek to raise awareness about how therapists' personal narratives regarding physical appearance and beauty are shaped and how they impact the therapeutic relationship.
