Abstract
Sol-gel synthesised BaTiO3 particles were coated with Cu by electroless deposition to investigate depolarisation effects on the crystal sructure of fine BaTiO3 particles. TEM micrographs show that BaTiO3 particles were embedded in the Cu metal. XRD revealed that the Cu coating increases the c/a ratio of BaTiO3 particles heat treated at 900 C for 10 and 20 h. On the other hand, further oxidation of Cu-coated BaTiO3 particles decreases the c/a ratio of the particles. These results indicate that a metal coating enhances the tetragonality of the fine BaTiO3 particles. The results are consistent with the interpretation that a metal coating can reduce the depolarisation energy of a fine, polar BaTiO3 particle and thereby stabilises the tetragonal phase. 5 refs.
