Dangerous curves: politics and poetry in the work of Blaise Tobia
Afterimage, v 31(3)
01 Nov 2003
Abstract
Discusses the work of the American photographer Blaise Tobia. The author suggests how art can be both poetic and political, describes how Tobia's work uses iconic signs to show the interplay between nature and culture, and examines this technique in his series Signs and Wonders (2000) and the five interlocking images of the Dangerous Curves series. He traces this motif through single works such as Giglio (1999; illus.) and Alpha and Omega (1999; illus.), and concludes by asserting that Tobia's work challenges the viewers themselves to step `behind the lens'.
