Designing for conflicting constraints
Computing systems in engineering, v 4(1), pp 75-86

Abstract
This paper discusses a methodology for designing for conflicting constraints. This is in contradistinction to approaches which are constraint-driven that manipulate the constraints to resolve the conflicts. The work presented in this paper is structure-driven in that we do not change the constraints, rather we manipulate the structure to conform to the constraints. It is suggested that there are conflicts in the way a structure variable affects behaviour variables. A procedure for making these conflicts explicit is proposed. Once these conflicts are represented explicitly, they may be used in a design process. © 1993.
