Detection of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAH) originating from Jet Fuel (Jet A/A-1) in Lung Cancer Tissue from a World Trade Center Responder

Abstract
The world trade center disaster emitted a toxic plume which included multiple carcinogens, including commercial jet fuel JA-1, asbestos, and radioactive particles. Until recently, lung cancer rates in exposed individuals were not more frequent than those of the unexposed civilians. We report finding burned PAH in the center of a lung cancer specimen from a patient exposed to the plume on 9/11. These PAH chemicals burned at a temperature of 300°C prior to inhalation, supporting the concept that commercial jet fuel, JA-1, induced cancer, at least, in part. The temperature is not consistent with the combustion temperature of tobacco cigarettes.
