Development of a Contextual Family Therapy Therapist Action Index
Journal of family psychology, v 3(3), pp 322-331
Mar 1990
Abstract
This article reports on the development of a contextual therapist action index. The index was developed as part of a family therapy treatment outcome study. Preliminary reliability and validity data are presented that support the usefulness of the index as a check on the extent to which treatment is delivered as intended in the course of treatment outcome research. Three studies are presented. The first is concerned with developing items that correspond to actions of contextual family therapists as practiced in the field. The second study reports modest construct validity and moderate degrees of reliability. The third study demonstrates high degrees of discriminate validity in differentiating segments of contextual versus psychoeducational sessions. It is suggested that the index can be used to provide an empirical basis on which to train therapists either to increase or to decrease specific behaviors during therapy and as an aid in the supervision and teaching of family therapy.
