Abstract
Merrit and Putnam introduced diphenylhydantoin sodium (Dilantin) as an anticonvulsant in 1938. This agent is used extensively for the control of convulsive disorders of all etiologies. Adverse clinical and pathological reactions have been occasionally associated with administration of this drug. Reported hypersensitivity reactions occur infrequently but are important because of the large number of patients taking Dilantin. In this communication the authors report a case of exfoliative dermatitis and hepatic injury which followed Dilantin therapy. Stimulation of this patient's lymphocytes demonstrated an increased incorporation of DNA in the presence of Dilantin.
