Abstract
The purpose of this pilot study is to explore the relationship between dependency and depression in members of the military using an art therapy assessment technique. The goal is to identify patterns in the art productions to determine if themes of depression and dependency can be correlated to satisfaction and dissatisfaction in the military. Literature from psychological, military, and art therapy disciplines is surveyed. Eighteen members of the Air Force, with varied backgrounds, participated in the study. Three drawings, a questionnaire, and verbal associations are included in the procedure. The results of the study suggest three important outcomes: 1) there is an inverse relationship between depressive and dependent indicators in the drawings; 2) there is a relationship between years in service and depression; 3) art therapy assessment is an intervention which can identify those members prone to depression and possible self-destructive episodes. Further study is necessary to test validity and generalizability.
