Abstract
Indigent care is a major issue for both society and the hospital industry. It is a high priority at Nashua Memorial Hospital (Nashua, New Hampshire). In trying to strategically plan for this concern, the hospital needed a clear definition of indigent care. Nashua defines indigent care as the care provided to individuals who have no viable sources of funds with which the hospital can be reimbursed for the cost of care. The hospital has adopted the Hill-Burton criteria for identifying those people who are eligible for care. Since the hospital has identified these patients consistently in the past, it was able to determine historically the extent of indigent care provided. Using the Hill-Burton criteria, the hospital was able to determine that approximately 1.25% of gross patient services revenue is the average annual allowance for indigent care. This information was used in capital analysis models to project the allowances associated with indigent care during the next 10 years.
