Abstract
Based on a review of previous research & three case studies, common themes in the histories of war veterans who experienced a delayed onset of posttraumatic stress disorder are outlined: (1) lengthy periods of relatively good postwar adjustment, (2) guilt about a particular act of omission or commission during combat, & (3) similar defense mechanisms. Implications of these findings for understanding posttraumatic stress disorder are explored. 22 References. Adapted from the source document.
