Abstract
One of administrative leaders described the transition to a new high-challenge, high-profile, high-risk position -- indeed, the most challenging and visible of the leader's career -- as feeling "hazardous as walking a tightrope 15 stories off the ground without a net." Though for his or her first career in medicine or research the leader may have spent years in training, leadership may work just the opposite. A high-level leader's education usually begins the first day on the job. The leader is expected to understand and manage conflict and group dynamics, deal effectively with disruptive behaviors in the work place, and navigate institutional politics on behalf of an entire department. Also, physicians and scientists who win positions of leadership are usually intelligent high achievers, competitive and sometimes worried about their image. Some physicians pursue coursework or a business management degree -- an MBA or an MPA -- to hone their skills.
