Abstract
The growing literature on destination management and image tends to focus mainly on promotional messages. Apparently unbeknownst to many researchers, this view mirrors Dann's idea that the language of tourism speaks in a single voice (1996a). This article presents a critical view on Dann's argument and focuses on the educational and other aspects of tourism communication. This article studies the way Yunnan Province, China is presented in three main Chinese travel magazines. The structure of iconic analysis and the representation of local communities presented in these magazines leads to the conclusion that a more nuanced and subtle understanding of the languages of tourism should replace the limitations of the current conventional wisdom.
