Effect of Single Molecule Fluctuations on the Enzymatic Turnover Rate in Multi‐Molecule Systems

Abstract
The turnover rate of single enzyme molecules has been found to fluctuate widely. Here we develop a model for the reaction kinetics of fluctuating enzymes and apply it to systems containing <2000 enzyme copies. Using β‐galactosidase as a model, we find that the effects of the individual molecular rate fluctuations persist for long periods of time (order minutes), even in system containing ~1000 molecular copies.
