Abstract
In this study we developed measures of socialization effectiveness — task mastery, work group functioning, knowledge and acceptance of culture, personal learning, and role clarity — that are consistent with the conceptual definition of organizational socialization. Further, we examined the relationship between socialization tactics and effective socialization. Surveys were administered to 131 employees participating in a Career Development Program. Data on employees' task mastery were obtained from their respective supervisors through a questionnaire. Findings revealed aspects of socialization tactics salient to effective organizational socialization. Experienced members of the organization, which embodied the investiture tactics and additional support items, were found to be critical in fostering effective socialization of new employees. Implications for researchers and practitioners are examined.
