Abstract
Effects of Psyllium on Parameters of Glucose Metabolism: A Review
The objective of this review was to evaluate the clinical significance of Psyllium and its effects on parameters of glucose metabolism. To this end, the literature on glucose- lowering effects of Psyllium listed in CAMbase, CAMQUEST, the Cochrane Library, EMBASE and PubMed was used and recorded systematically. The last search was on September 16, 2015. From a total of 107 publications recognized as potentially relevant, 11 were randomized controlled human studies, in which 417 subjects had ingested Psyllium. In 2 studies, the herbal medicinal product demonstrated significant reductions in the fasting glucose levels. In 1 study, the hemoglobin A1c (HbA1c) level was significantly reduced by 1.6%. In 4 studies, significant effects of Psyllium on the postprandial glucose levels were measured. Furthermore, in 4 studies, Psyllium significantly reduced the level of insulin after food intake. The Jadad score of the selected papers was 3 points, on average, with a minimal value of 1 and a maximal value of 5. Currently, the evidence from published randomized trials for a glucose-lowering effect of Psyllium is not sufficient for an official recommendation or an application to therapeutic guidelines. However, since positive effects on glucose metabolism parameters were observed in some, partly smaller studies, investigation of the glucose-lowering effects of Psyllium in larger, methodologically flawless studies would be advantageous.
