Abstract
A study is made of the problem of electron dynamics in the presence of a plane electrostatic wave in a model in which the Earth's magnetic field is parabolic. The problem is reduced to a Hamiltonian system with two degrees of freedom, which is investigated by the methods of perturbation theory. The structure of the phase space of the system is described, and the phenomena of capture into the resonance and scattering on the resonance are considered. It is shown that these phenomena lead to breaking of the second (longitudinal) adiabatic invariant and stochastization of the electron dynamics.
