Emotions, Attachment, and the Relational Reframe: The First Session
Journal of systemic therapies, v 17(2), pp 36-50
01 Jun 1998
Abstract
Client emotions have been under utilized in family therapy as an intervention target and tool. As part of an evolving family-based treatment for depressed adolescents, this paper explores the use of emotions in setting a relational reframe early in treatment. Relational reframe refers to shifting the focus of treatment from reducing symptoms to rebuilding secure and trusting relationships between family members. A theoretical and clinical description of this intervention is described, and a case example is provided.
