Abstract
A design is a statement about values, and design is intricately bound up with evaluation so that any design decision in an architectural context is either explicitly or implicitly based on evaluation. On the hypotheses that a multi-objective system of many attributes such as architecture is describable linguistically and that all natural or artificial languages of interest can be given transformational grammars, this paper sets out to give conceptual general answers to the following questions: 1. (a) What is the meaning of evaluation? 2. (b) What are the forms of the operational rules whereby the meaning of architectural evaluation is built up from the space, elements and contexts of a complex and contradictory architecture? © 1981.
