Expanding design spaces through new design variables
Design studies, v 14(2), pp 210-221

Abstract
This paper describes the concept that the introduction of new design variables into a design process leads to solutions which may not have been possible earlier. This is useful where design constraints are in conflict and hence there are no feasible solutions. It is also useful when a better design is desired. The concept is demonstrated with examples solved using optimization techniques illustrating how new solution spaces emerge with the introduction of new design variables. The paper concludes with a discussion relating this concept to models of creative design. © 1993 Butterworth-Heinemann Ltd.
