Abstract
Abraham Flexner's Report of 1910 led to transformative changes in medical education in the US. His work left an indelible imprimatur in the way medical schools delivered knowledge to students and how they learned. Flexner also warned against excessive rigidity in accreditation standards, which, in his view, would impede curricular innovation and impair student experience. His foresight becomes all the more cogent today, as medical school graduates are starting to confront the most sweeping changes yet seen in health delivery systems and financial reimbursement. Experiential learning is quickly becoming the rule rather than the exception. The traditional lecture will not disappear completely; however, it is indisputable that "talking heads," as a means of delivery of knowledge, are going by the wayside. Medical schools and other professional schools must gain an understanding of generational changes in learning and develop "value-added" student-friendly and meaningful experiences responsive to the challenges of a changing world.
