Abstract
The process of definition and redefinition concerning medical diseases reveals much about the evolution of medical thought and practice. The changing use of labels in renal medicine reflected how physicians thought about kidney disease. Three of these labels are discussed; dropsy, Bright's disease and end-stage renal disease.
