Abstract
Results of tests of 18 full-scale horizontal joint assemblies of the "American," "closed," or "platform" type subjected to concentric compressive loading are reported. The tests were conducted under increasing axial load to failure with continuous monitoring of the load-deflection and cracking behavior of the joints. The main parameters investigated were the effect of strength of the joint grout on the ultimate carrying capacity and the mode of failure of the joint. A study of the effect of reinforcement to prevent wall end splitting and the effect of joint length on the ultimate load carrying capacity and stiffness characteristic of the joints was also made. The experimental results are compared to the Prestressed Concrete Inst. recommendations for designing horizontal joints and to other available data.
