Abstract
This paper investigates whether and how homophily operates in one university setting. Using unique data on students nested within faculty members, we assess the extent to which there is gender and racial similarity in student-faculty undergraduate research pairs at a diverse university. We find that homophily is a less influential social force in shaping mentoring relationships than are the gendered and racialized histories and contexts of academic disciplines. Implications for the future of higher education are discussed.
