Really Getting It Admittedly, we can find thesis statements that function as the organizing principle behind not only essays but also entire books, with the social sciences tending to dominate. The great problems of our time-those of conflict and peace, international development, poverty, human rights and justice, energy and sustainable development-are complex and rarely avail themselves to simple answers.
