Abstract

Natural range increases are reported for some grasshopper species in the midwestern US and in the Great Lakes region. Unnatural range increases are also noted for some species nationwide as a result of grasshopper colonization of overgrazed, deforested, and roadside areas. Range reductions and extinctions are highlighted in brief case studies, emphasizing the need to establish small sanctuaries for grasshopper species protection from which grazing mammals are excluded.
