Abstract

Although all too often paid only lip service when considering the treatment of the individual with post-traumatic stress disorder, both group and family therapy have a central role in promoting improvement and growth. Groups have proven their worth with specialized populations such as the combat veteran and the rape victim, although research with other populations is spotty. Family therapy is used less frequently, even though it seems to be essential in resolving symptoms derived from family trauma or those that are exacerbated by nonsupportive or countertherapeutic family patterns.
