How Tompkins rubber company used analytic hierarchy process to enhance ISO 9000-related decision making
Production and inventory management journal, Vol.43(1/2), pp.13-22+V

Abstract
This article presents a case study of AHP models used by Tompkins Rubber Company that contributed to the successful implementation of ISO 9000 certification. Models were used for two ISO 9000-element-related decisions (purchasing and control of nonconforming product) and three ISO 9000-implementation-related decisions (the decision to pursue ISO 9000 certification, management representative selection, and registrar selection). The hierarchies presented in this article reflect the wide range of applicability of AHP models. For example, the management representative used AHP to select an ISO 9000 implementation course and a team of internal auditors. In fact, these models are so versatile that the reader can tailor them by adding or deleting criteria and alternatives to meet the needs of any specific production or service environment. ISO 9000 certification requires comprehensive documentation to demonstrate that a company has appropriate systems in place to assure consistency and quality of performance to its customers.
