Abstract
Donnelly talks about her relationship with two patients, Diana and Armand, both in their late twenties and both experiencing serious psychotic disorders. As a staff nurse in a psychiatric hospital, she was assigned to dine with them everyday. Her relationship with them changed qualitatively in ensuing weeks, including her ability to reach and comfort them when their symptoms were getting out of control. Her lunchtime experience was the exception that put the rule to the test. She learned that to be human is to be spontaneous as long as that spontaneity is authentic and egalitarian.
