Abstract
Protecting and serving the people of Minneapolis, Minnesota, has become amazingly more effective in recent years thanks to imaging technology, specifically the fingerprint identification solutions developed by Printrak International. The Minneapolis Police Department is one of over 150 national, state, county, and municipal agencies worldwide utilizing Printrak biometric imaging technology. According to Sergeant Dennis Bernstrom, of the 50-60 cases closed strictly on the basis of fingerprint identification so far in 1995, none would have been solved without the automated fingerprint identification system (AFIS). Since its initial implementation, Bernstrom estimates the Printrak system has enabled law enforcement officials to successfully close several thousand cases in Minneapolis alone. Further, searches that used to take over 30 minutes are now routinely made in 2 minutes. Printrak's newest product line, the Series 2000, features advanced chip technology and open system design, which makes it the fastest and most accurate AFIS ever developed.
