Impact and Hope for the Live Music Industry
Ethnomusicology review, Vol.24, p1
01 Jan 2023
Abstract
Apruzzese, Barretta, and Tompkins investigates how the pandemic is affecting and will affect live music in the US context. The pertinent elements of the industry and its players is discussed, followed by the impact of the pandemic. Also discussed how the live music industry has adapted, then how those adaptations may affect the future of the industry, including the results of a survey of contemporary music consumers. Three main factors, fueled by technology, led to the growth of the touring industry in North America over the past twenty years: a greater number of artists actively touring, likely related to the number of musicians who have entered the marketplace; the rising cost of concert tickets; and the growth of the festival marketplace in the US.
