Abstract

Consumer behavior Department stores Human resource management Models Retail stores Salespeople Workforce planning
The use of more efficient manpower planning is a good approach for increasing marketing productivity, particularly in labor intensive sectors such as retailing. Retail department stores have a unique set of problems which make applications of waiting line models to manpower planning somewhat complex. However, a quasi-subjective waiting line model provides an objective basis for sales manpower planning, and its use can greatly reduce the cost of providing sales help, which is often the highest variable cost in a retail department store. All of the model's parameter settings may be obtained from department store management. This model may also be used equally effectively by other types of retailers, such as specialty stores, which consist of one or several 'departments'.
