Interaction of food deprivation state with food intake recall in humans

Abstract
Ross and Eichenbaum (2006) reported that damage to the hippocampus impairs recall of a socially transmitted food preference in rats. Del Parigi et al. (2004) reported that obese humans show a post-ingestive decrease in hippocampus activity as compared with lean humans. We asked the question as to whether food intake recall, measured with a food frequency questionnaire (FFQ), would differ between the pre- and post-ingestive state. Twenty-four women (13 lean, BMI 22.5±2; and 11 obese, BMI 35.3±6) consumed 600
ml of flavored water or a 1
kcal/ml liquid meal on two separate days, 2
h after eating a self-chosen meal. Thirty minutes later, they completed a FFQ with food items grouped per the USDA Pyramid and standardized servings indicated for each item. Ss reported their intake as servings per day, week or month. All responses were converted to servings per month prior to analysis. Total reported servings across all food items in the fasted condition (Totfas) were greater than total reported servings in the fed condition (Totfed) (

p=.01). A between group comparison showed a trend (÷2=2.8,
p=.09) with 8 women in the obese group reporting Totfas > Totfed while 8 women in the lean group reported Totfas < Totfed. Further research on the effect of food-deprivation state on the validity of food intake recall seems warranted.
