Abstract
The system Al sub 2 O sub 3 -ZrO sub 2 (Y sub 2 O sub 3 ) with different amounts of ZrO sub 2 and an addition of 30 wt.% TiN were studied. The amount of stabilizer Y sub 2 O sub 3 was changed from 1.3 to 3.4 mol%. The test specimens, 3x6x36 mm in size, were obtained from a dried charge by hot pressing (P=20 MPa) on an installation with induction heating in graphite compression molds with the use of a protective coating based on boron nitride. The specimens were tested for strength in three-point bending. Vickers hardness was measured under a load of 98 N. The content of tetragonal and monoclinic ZrO sub 2 was determined. The main phase components were alpha -Al sub 2 O sub 3 , monoclinic, tetragonal, and cubic ZrO sub 2 , and TiN. The formation of rhombohedral phase in the surface layer of partly stabilized zirconium-dioxide ceramic increases bending strength by at least 20%.
