Jane Austen's rejection of Rousseau: A novelistic and feminist initiation
Papers on language and literature, v 30(3)
22 Jun 1994
Abstract
An examination of two Jane Austen novels, "Northanger Abbey" and "Pride and Prejudice" is presented from a feminist perspective. Austen responded to prevailing ideas concerning sexual stereotyping in a highly controlled and consistent fashion that paralleled her growing mastery of the conventions of novel-writing and rejected the philosophy of Jean-Jacques Rousseau.
