Abstract
Objective: Delivering culturally sensitive care is a challenge when the research available on a group is limited, or as with the Amish, they deliberately choose to remain separate from the dominant culture. Methods: This work draws on participant observation over a 3-year period while a team of nurse researchers from the University, a clinic within the Amish community, and an organization for form safety, collaborated in developing an interactive educational game for Amish children. Results: Lessons learned while conducting research within an Old Order Amish community are shared. Conclusions: Religious and cultural values underlie the Amish response to life, death, health and illness. Nurses who provide health care services for the Amish should have an understanding of the religious beliefs and underpinnings of the culture, as it shapes and guides their behavior. In addition, one needs to be familiar with Amish history as it continues to influence the present.
