Abstract
Increasing evidence has identified a complex relationship between neurons and malignant glial cells, leading to the rapid expansion of the field of cancer neuroscience. Of particular interest is the demonstrated ability of gliomas to integrate into functional neuronal networks of the brain. The extent of these interactions and the ability of these connections to influence and remodel circuits remains incompletely understood. Emerging technologies have allowed the mapping and monitoring of the structural and functional networks of the brain and, more recently, the interrogation of malignant glioma circuits. This review provides insight into how these tools and techniques may be leveraged to understand neuron-glioma interactions, establishing a crossroads between functional neurosurgery and neuro-oncology.
