Abstract
The local stability of an equilibrium population configuration is investigated. The population is governed by a density-dependent, age-structured, nonlinear renewal equation. Local stability is shown to depend essentially on the rate of change of the net reproduction rate as a function of the population size. Examples illustrating the results and the characteristics promoting stability are discussed.
