Abstract
A review essay on books by: Sandra J. Newman, Worlds Apart? Long Term Care in Australia and the United States (New York: Haworth Press, 1987); Laura Reif & Brahna Trager [Eds], International Perspectives on Long-Term Care (New York: Haworth Press, 1985); Merl C. Hokenstad & Katherine A. Kendall [Eds], Gerontological Social Work: International Perspectives (New York, Haworth Press, 1988 [see listings in IRPS No. 54]). These cross-national comparative studies on long-term care suggest that the US does not have the same commitment to its elderly as do other industrial societies. Newman examines differences in nursing home care, domiciliary care, & community care, as well as basic philosophical value differences between Australia & the US. The Reif & Trager collection addresses various specific problems, eg, cost containment, service coordination, & family dependency care in various industrialized Western nations. The Hokenstad & Kendall work analyzes demographic & historical factors & social work issues for many nations. These studies provide valuable insights into US policy on long-term care for the elderly. 1 Reference. M. Malas
