Abstract
Zirconium is a desirable metal for coatings due to its high melting point and resistance to corrosion. However standard methods to electroplate this metal have previously been limited to high temperature (>700°C) molten salts. Recent literature has suggested that deep eutectic solvents can be used as an electrolyte at low temperatures to electrochemically deposit Zr. However, the low current efficiencies of these solvents limit their use. Our work proposes to use a combination of deep eutectic solvents, alternate Zr salts that manipulate the Zr reduction potential, and ‘crowded solvent’ concepts to deposit conformal Zr coatings at low temperatures. In this work, we have explored both DC and pulse electroplating methods to deposit metallic coatings of zirconium metal. Standard electrochemical methods will be used to monitor the variation in the reduction potential of Zr and the electrochemical window. The approaches being developed as part of this project are also being expanded to other ‘impossible’ to electroplate metals. In this talk, we will present the electroplating results from a series of different deep eutectic solvents using both DC and pulse electroplating methods.
