Abstract
Lunovula, a new genus in the subfamily Ovulinae, differs from other ovulid genera in having a strongly thickened shell with a wide aperture, an externally thickened outer lip, and pronounced columellar dentition. Among the Ovulidae, having a thick shell is correlated with having aposematic (warning) coloration ; Lunovula may prove to be aposematic when the living animal is discovered. The only known species in the genus is Lunovula finleyi new species, recorded from deep water in Hawaii and the Philippines. These disjunct records are not unusual : ovulids have planktonic veligers, and many species that were formerly considered to be endemics have broad Indo-Pacific distributions.
