Abstract
The Mitchell/Giurgola Architects in the US, in conjunction with Richard Thorp, an Australian architect, won the design competition for the new Australian Parliament House. Therefore, the US firm set up a new office in Australia, about a mile from the project site. Because it was requested that 75% of the staff be Australian, the firm undertook a major recruiting effort in Australia. The firm uses a special method of working where each project is organized around a design team. To use the team system, the project was broken down into smaller sections. The project received the constant attention of Romaldo Giurgola, with several more US partners and associates coming to the Australian office. The assimilation of the large number of Australian people into the project team system was successful since the focus of the entire office was on the excellence of the work and because there was so much work to do.
